  • La Principauté de Monaco tient une place importante dans la vie et l’œuvre de l’écrivain d’origine écossaise Robert W. Service (1874-1958). Après avoir acquis une grande célébrité dans les pays anglo-saxons pour ses écrits sur le Grand Nord et la Première Guerre mondiale sur le front de la Somme, il séjourne à Monaco qui lui inspire Le Paradis empoisonné. Un roman de Monte-Carlo (The Poisoned Paradise. A Romance of Monte-Carlo), publié en 1922. Cette œuvre, qui s’inscrit dans la veine du roman populaire d’aventures, eut un grand succès, comme son adaptation cinématographique, mais elle est également un document intéressant sur Monaco durant les Années Folles.

    Après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale Robert W. Service s’installe définitivement avec sa famille en principauté où il trouve, comme il le dit lui-même, des conditions très propices à son écriture. Il continuera à être célébré par les médias, notamment anglo-saxons, particulièrement au moment du mariage princier en 1956, qui sera l’occasion pour lui d’avoir des relations privilégiées avec Grace Kelly et ses parents.

  • Issue n°43 of the Annales Monegasques published by Palais Princier de Monaco - Prince's Palace of Monaco dedicates a long article in french about Robert William Service, a Scottish writer in Monaco written by Charlotte Service-Longepe, his great-granddaughter and biographer, knowing almost by heart every poems and events of her famous ancestors life.

    The principality of Monaco takes a significant part in the life and work of the Scottish writer Robert W. Service (1874–1958). After having been world widely celebrated for his Canadian High North writings and then regarding his First World War poems on the Somme front, he dwelt at Monaco which inspires him The Poisoned Paradise.
    A Romance of Monte-Carlo published in 1922. This book alongside with its film adaptation took advantage of the hugely mainstream adventure novel trend. Besides of this literary success, the novel is giving an extremely relevant account of Monaco during the Roaring Twenties.

    After the Second World War, Robert W. Service settles definitively with his family at Monaco where he finds, as he explained it many times, all the propitious components allowing his inspiration to flourish. Service was regularly celebrated by the local and Anglo-Saxon media; when in 1956, the Royal Wedding happened to be another highlight owing to his special moments with Grace Kelly and her parents.

The scottish born adventurer Robert William Service (1874-1958) nicknamned the people's poet became the voice of wanderlust and wilderness in the Canadian High North thanks to his talent for rhymes, rhythms and story-telling of folkloric tales. Ever since he became the famous  "Bard of the Yukon", his poems caught the imagination of generations of readers of all kind, armchair travellers or followers of the open road due to their timeless themes. As striking as one century ago, his poetry describes the beauty of the world and embraces every shade of daily life, depicting a wide scope of human thoughts in which we all may find our own echo.
