"As one might expect, the classic Yukon poems are represented, but this anthology spans the entire length of Service’s career, including some material that he wrote before coming to the Yukon and other material from the 1950s, a few years before he passed away in 1958 at Lancieux. Robert W. Service's vagabond of verses career blossomed in the Canadian Great North. A journey led by a diversity of jobs from ploughman to bank clerk, from hobo to war correspondent; each time penning his life into rhymes which have spread throughout the world.
Ever since he became Bard of the Yukon, his poems have caught the spirit of wanderlust latent in every one of us, his verses living on forever in the imagination of generations of readers of all kind, armchair wanderers or followers of the open road, all reading his ballads to provide them solace, encouragement, philosophical inspiration or a just smile.

Robert W. Service was first introduced to me during a fishing trip, with friends, to Alaska in 1995. We attended a show in Skagway where a local artist, by the name of Buckwheat, emotionally recited several Service poems. I became an immediate fan. I bought my first book of Service poems, “Collected Poems of Robert W. Service”, in Juneau and it became the first of what would become an extended collection. Thanks to Peter Mitham (author of “Robert W. Service: A Bibliography”) who put me in contact with a couple of collectors, I now have over 500 items, including books, photos, original letters, sheet music and other ephemera.
I enjoy picking up one of the many books of Robert W. Service’s poetry and opening it to a random page to read the message he has for us. In my mind, I like to think that I am like Robert W. Service the adventurous vagabond, but I know that he was unique and that I never had the courage to be so independent. I admire him for the care he had for mankind and nature. And, thanks to Charlotte for her dedication to preserve his legacy. I find it difficult to select a favorite Service poem, but the first to always come to mind is “Fleurette”, even though I cannot finish it with dry eyes.Charlie Nightengale
